In 2015, Chaz Mostert’s monstrous crash at the Bathurst 1000 sidelined him for the remainder of the season, creating an unexpected opportunity for one of Prodrive Racing Australia’s (now Tickford Racing) brightest young talents, Cam Waters. After co-driving with Mostert at Bathurst and dominating the Dunlop Super2 Series that same year, Waters had already shown he had the talent and determination to compete at the highest level.
His first solo V8 Supercars start came at the ITM Auckland 500 in Pukekohe, New Zealand, where the iconic Pepsi Max FGX lined up on the grid. The event proved to be a baptism of fire, featuring intense battles, dramatic incidents, and challenging conditions that tested even the most experienced drivers. Despite the pressure, Waters demonstrated the composure and speed that would soon become his trademark.
The opportunity to contest the remainder of the season ultimately cemented Waters’ place in the #6 seat, leading to a full-time drive with Tickford Racing in 2016 and beyond. Looking back, the Auckland 500 marked the beginning of a remarkable Supercars main game career, with Waters growing into one of the category’s most respected and fiercely competitive drivers.
