Supercars FAI 1000 Classic Mt Panorama Bathurst – 1999

The V8 Supercars grand finale began with crashes and carnage, with the Safety Car deployed ten times in the first half of the Bathurst Classic.

The emotion of what was Dick Johnson’s final Bathurst 1000 reached a peak when Paul Radisich hit the lead on lap 137 in the second DJR Falcon.

But then Radisich’s Dick Johnson Racing Falcon AU suffered a punctured tyre, leaving Steven Richards and Greg Murphy with a clear run in their Commodore VT.

It was back-to-back wins for Richards after the previous year’s victory with Jason Bright, as well as a return to the podium for veteran Fred Gibson, who last won as team boss in 1992 with Jim Richards and Mark Skaife.

The ever-present Holden Racing Team swept the minor places, with Craig Lowndes and Cameron McConville taking second – and crucially enough points to clinch Lowndes’ third Championship – and Mark Skaife and Paul Morris third in the second HRT Commodore. In a first the Bathurst 1000 awarded points in the Australian Touring Car Championship, by 1999 known as the Shell Championship Series.

This release also includes a range of unseen vision. It includes the race action that unfolded while television viewers of the day were watching the commercial breaks.
