This is a 1:18 diecast scale model Ford Mustang as driven by Dick Johnson and Larry Perkins in the 1985 Castrol 500 at Sandown - the very first time these two Aussie motorsport legends shared a race car, making it an important model to add to your collection.
1985 saw the introduction of International Group A rules, leaving Johnson without a Ford Falcon eligible to race.
That led to him sourcing a pair of Mustangs from Zakspeed in Germany. Despite obstacles in the development of the car, Johnson still managed to finish runner-up in the 1985 Australian Touring Car Championship.
Perkins had won Bathurst three years in a row from 1982 to 1984 with Peter Brock, but left the Holden Dealer Team mid-season in 1985 and did a deal to join 1981 Bathurst winner Johnson for the endurance races.
The Mustang was looking good for the race at Sandown too, qualifying in third position behind Brock's HDT Commodore and Allan Grice's Roadways Commodore.
The Mustang was fast in race trim and leapt to the lead for the first 22 laps, setting the fastest lap of the race in the process. However the car was unreliable, a broken axle seeing the car delayed significantly before finishing 19th.
This Classic Carlectables model has been produced in 1:18 scale in a limited edition of 750.
It is accurately detailed with cowl panel features, a finely molded vent, twin antennas, bonnet scoop, and kill switch. Opening the bonnet is aided by a bonnet release button on the chassis.
The chassis bears an individually numbered etched metal plate which is the edition number of the model.
