Father and son head-to-head!

THE 1998 AMP Bathurst 1000 featured some of the best Super Touring drivers and teams from around the world, but the race itself really boiled down to the all-day fight between the might of the Volvo factory team led by Swede Rickard Rydell and Jim Richards and the privately-run Nissan of Jim’s son Steve and Brit Matt Neal.

The Volvo ended up claiming victory, becoming the first five-cylinder car to win the ‘Great Race’, adding the Bathurst 1000 success to the team’s British Touring Car Championship win earlier that year and giving Richards his sixth of an eventual seven Bathurst 1000 wins.

The father and son battle within the Richards family was a key element of this race, the second time in a row that the ‘Great Race’ had been run for two-litre Super Tourers.

As had been the case in 1997, the cream of the British Touring Car Championship – the Volvo and Triple Eight’s Vauxhall teams – headed Down Under to take on the local Audi squad run by Brad Jones Racing and a range of independent drivers, led by BMW ace Cameron McLean.

The ’98 race featured a mix of cars and drivers and a bigger grid than the previous year’s event. In addition to the Super Tourers competing for outright victory, Schedule S touring cars from New Zealand and Group 3E production cars helped fill up the field, all the while enjoying their own class battles.

Many of the big-name stars of the Super Touring era are featured in this race; watch as John Cleland, Rickard Rydell, Derek Warwick, Paul Radisich and Tim Harvey take on local stars including Russell Ingall, Greg Murphy, Paul Morris and Brad Jones.

Included on this release is the full race day telecast, including the pre-race festivities, Top 10 Shootout highlights, the Porsche Cup and Austin Healey International Tribute support races from Sunday morning and then the ‘main course’, the 161-lap Mountain classic, with a commentary line-up including Murray Walker, Peter Brock and Allan Moffat.

This release also includes a range of unseen vision too. We have included on this DVD the race action that unfolded while television viewers of the day were busy watching commercials!

This DVD is a must-have for your collection of Seven Sport Magic Moments of Motorsport titles, celebrating the Super Touring era at Mount Panorama.
