Supercars FAI 1000 Mt Panorama Bathurst – 2000

The 2000 race will forever be remembered as the day of the Big Wet, with the Bathurst region being deluged by rain that began earlier in the week and continued right through until race day. It was so bad that by the weekend the spectator carpark became unusable to all vehicles other than off-road four-wheel-drives. The rain didn’t let up on race day, making it a very challenging day on the mountain for the drivers.

In the end it was Jason Bargwanna and Garth Tander who best coped with the appalling conditions to win in their Garry Rogers Motorsport Valvoline/Cummins Commodore VT, just a few seconds clear of the Shell/Dick Johnson Racing Falcon AU of Paul Radisich and Jason Bright.

Third place went to the previous year’s winners, Greg Murphy and Steven Richards, with Murphy struggling to coax his dying Gibson Motorsport Commodore home in the closing stages as Shell Falcon driver Steven Johnson applied the pressure.

As usual, Bathurst in 2000 had everything – from the elation of what was something of any unexpected victory for Bargwanna and Tander (making only his second Great Race start) to the despair of defeat for Tony Longhurst, who looked on course to win the race until crashed trying to overtake a lapped car while leading near the end of the race.

No Support Races featured in this release, and due to the nature of the footage minor technical faults may appear during the program.
